Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. Her mother was her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit the college after a year of study and became an aide to teachers. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist who performed her work live at poetry readings. She then teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In an Roots performance, she was spotted as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as a performer during the Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first signed artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
